Seminar on ‘Empowering Futures in Marine & Shipping’ organised by Canadian University of Bangladesh.
The Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) recently organized an outstanding seminar, led by Associate Professor Capt. Md. Nasir Uddin, Chairman of the Department of Shipping and Maritime Science (SMS). This impactful event highlighted the vast career possibilities awaiting students in the marine and shipping industries and the potential for Bangladesh to play a significant role in the global maritime landscape.
The esteemed speakers praised CUB for pioneering education in this vital sector, noting the department’s initiative to launch two in-demand programs tailored to industry needs. Capt. AKM Golam Kibria inspired the audience with a vision of countless opportunities in maritime, emphasizing that students today have the chance to shape their careers in this rapidly evolving field.
Capt. Sabbir Mahmood underscored the magnitude of investment in maritime with a staggering $14 trillion market value globally, noting Bangladesh’s strategic position as the eighth-most populous country within this sector. With 95% of shore-based marine positions still to be grabbed by Mariners, he highlighted the high demand for skilled professionals and the potential for graduates to drive growth and generate foreign remittance.
Capt. A.K.M. Golam Kibria emphasized being a marine expert and how a university like Canadian University of Bangladesh can explore and unlock opportunities for marine professionals. He suggested expanding horizons and transforming from shipping to maritime. Ship chartering, brokering, and third-party ship management could be diversified professional roles for a mariner. The whole marine community in Bangladesh is expecting Canadian University to be a center of maritime excellence.
Capt. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir, President of the Bangladesh Maritime Law Society, focused on dedication to opening shore careers for Mariners. Before switching to shore jobs, Mariners must be well-educated with the respective professional degrees and prepare themselves for the challenges ahead. Canadian University of Bangladesh could be the best choice for marine professionals seeking preparation. For legal issues, maritime insurance, claims, and arbitration, students must study hard with the help of a university like Canadian University of Bangladesh.
The event began with a warm welcome from A S M G Faruk, Acting Registrar, who shared CUB's mission, emphasizing its pioneering role as Bangladesh’s first private university to offer degrees in Shipping and Maritime Science, dedicated to shaping future leaders in the field. Prof. A S M Sherajul Haque, Treasurer of CUB, highlighted the evolution of the maritime industry from early explorations to modern advancements.
Capt. Md. Nasir Uddin, the seminar moderator, highlighted the career potential in marine education, reinforcing CUB’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of maritime leaders.
